Prompt care when you need it most

Dental pain and trauma rarely happen at a convenient time. At Lockleys Dental Clinic, we have three dentists on staff which gives us more flexibility than a single-dentist practice to accommodate urgent appointments. When you call, our team will assess the nature of your situation and arrange the earliest available appointment.

If you are in significant pain, have a swelling, or have experienced dental trauma, it is important to contact us as soon as possible. Early assessment and treatment generally leads to simpler outcomes and faster relief.

Common emergencies we treat

Toothache and dental pain

Persistent tooth pain is a signal that something needs attention — it does not typically resolve on its own. We will assess the underlying cause (decay, cracked tooth, infection, or other) and provide appropriate treatment to address both the pain and its cause.

Chipped or broken teeth

A tooth broken by a fall, accident, or biting on something hard can often be repaired with composite bonding or a crown, depending on the extent of the damage. Even a minor chip that is not painful should be examined to rule out cracks beneath the surface.

Lost fillings or crowns

A lost filling or crown exposes underlying tooth structure that can be sensitive and vulnerable to further damage. Contact us as soon as possible so we can assess the situation and arrange a temporary or permanent replacement.

Dental abscess and infection

Swelling of the gum or face, throbbing pain, a bad taste in your mouth, or fever can all be signs of a dental infection. Infections can spread and should be assessed promptly — please call us rather than waiting to see if the symptoms settle.

Knocked-out tooth (dental avulsion)

If a tooth is completely knocked out, time is critical. See the first-aid steps below and call us immediately. There is a possibility — depending on how quickly you act — that a permanent tooth can be replanted.

Dental trauma and loose teeth

A tooth that has been knocked loose or displaced following an accident or sporting injury needs urgent assessment. Do not attempt to force the tooth back into position — call us first.

Broken dentures or dental appliances

A fractured denture or broken retainer can affect your ability to eat and speak. Contact us to discuss repair or replacement options.

What to do in a dental emergency

  • Call us immediately — (08) 8443 7634. Do not wait to see whether the issue resolves.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Handle it by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently without scrubbing. Keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum and come straight in.
  • Pain relief: Over-the-counter analgesics (paracetamol or ibuprofen at recommended doses) may help while you wait. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — this can cause chemical burns.
  • Swelling: Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a cloth) to the outside of the cheek to help reduce swelling while you wait for your appointment.
  • Lost crown or filling: Avoid chewing on that side. Dental cement from a pharmacy can be used as a temporary measure until we can see you.

Sedation for nervous patients

If you are in significant pain but dental anxiety is making it difficult to seek help, you are not alone. Dr Alex Furlan offers IV sedation for anxious patients — you will be deeply relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. Nitrous oxide (happy gas) is also available as a lighter option. Please mention your anxiety when you call so we can arrange the most appropriate support.

Frequently asked questions

We aim to accommodate emergency patients on the same day when capacity allows. Having three dentists at our practice gives us more flexibility than a single-dentist practice. The best approach is to call us as early as possible — (08) 8443 7634 — so we can advise you on availability and what to do in the meantime.
Please call our practice number during business hours. If you have a severe dental emergency outside of our opening hours — particularly involving facial swelling or difficulty breathing/swallowing — please present to your nearest hospital emergency department.
Yes — we accept both Government Dental Scheme (GDS) and Emergency Dental Scheme (EDS) vouchers. Please mention your voucher when you call so we can prepare accordingly.
